Fish pond and signs of blooms to come

Considering the county we live in was declared a disaster area last month due to consistent downpours the front yard looks surprisingly okay.  The back yard has always been a challenge since day one. Add a few snapped trees, broken fencing and a enough pine needles from the tree next door and your pond really looks gross all 2,600+ gallons of it. Yuck and muck.

The water has warmed to feed them a little.
Feeding becomes like a free for all.

I should have put the camera in sports photo mode.
They simply refused to stay still for photos.

Neptune, Pico and Tough our Japanese koi passed in December, 2008 along with a few of the comets during a warm spell. They had come out of hibernation too early and began foraging for food.  Pine needles are not exactly a recommended diet.
 .

The one with the white spot on his nose,
doesn't take any crap from anybody.

Kind of like jaws.

These things are in full bloom. Three came with the house.
I wish they hadn't.  They seem to attract lots of bees.
I'm always asked what is my secret, what fertilizer do I use.

Neglect.

On the other hand, in the front yard.
Peonies get the babied

Roses get pruned, fed and sprayed.
Aphids are out in record numbers already.
All the rain means black spot will arrive too.

Warmer weather means dogs
do not care to have their sunbathing interrupted.
Even if they are in the backyard of weeds.

Such a good dog.
Notice how she looks right at me when I call her name?

Nice.

Enjoy your week everyone.

Love your fishies and your little dog, as well! Hope the weather doesn't cause too much trouble with your gardens this summer! We've had an early and longer-than normal spring in the Upper Midwest, so everything is green and lovely....the stuff that is normally starting to burn out from the sun by early June {i.e. hostas in the wrong place -- not in the shade}is huge and green and happy. Hope you have a Happy Monday, as well! xx P&H

Your pond is amazing as are the koi. I miss my koi so much, they made my pond do much more difficult to keep it clean.

I enjoyed the tour. Once I had a giant koi pond. But now I live in another house and have just a small garden pond. I remember how the koi were like pets, however. Every day when I go outside, the garden is looking more magnificent with the spring weather.

Glad you survived the rains...koi are amazing fish...so much personality. We had a small koi pond with four koi six years ago. But the egrets ate them all. My daughter, Grace, was so sad she had a funeral service for them. We will have a fountain here at Sea Cottage soon with a big basin that maybe we can keep some koi in. We will go visit the nearby koi farm and asked advice. Loved seeing yours...and I like their names. ox

What a wonderful post! thanks for sharing your fish & doggy with us. We had a pond when I was a child and I remember our koi - they really had personality.

(yes, we are having a ton of hail today as a cold front from the gulf of Alaska - it's crazy!)

Have a great week!

I love YOUR kOI pOND...HOW FUN TO HAVE THAT IN YOUR YARD. i'M SURE IT'S JUST ANOTHER THING TOMAINTAIN...BUT IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL!!!! Darn I hit caps, but I'm too lazy to go back & change it all, ooppps! & your flowers look mavelous, but we have bee problems here in the summer & that can really make it not fun to be outside, especially eatting! lol
Have fun in the sun..

Hi Rita,
I didn't know we had the same sun-bathing pooch!? My Sadie loves to lay in the sun too! It's so funny....if she knows the sun is shining in on a bed, she'll bark & come get me so I can lift her up to the bed & she'll run right over to the sun spot & take a snooze! Does yours do that? They are a fun breed huh?

Hope you can recover from all the storm mess! Your peonies look just like mine....I have also noticed the aphids out in record numbers attacking my roses too. I think I finally have them under control. What do you use for black spot?

Have a great weekend!

Shellagh

p.s. love the Paris spoon/marker!! Sooo cute :)
